People with Parkinson’s disease (PD), exercise is medicine!

Neurologists and Movement Disorder Specialists all agree, exercise and physical activity is imperative for Parkinson’s Patients. “Exercise is an important part of healthy living for everyone, but for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), exercise is medicine!” notes the Parkinson’s Foundation. “Physical activity has been shown to improve many PD symptoms, from balance and mobility issues to depression, constipation and even thinking skills.” The Bluegrass Parkinson’s Alliance offers several opportunities for members to get up and get moving!

Rock Steady Boxing

Offered at HITS fitness center, Rock Steady Boxing is a national program that utilizes research and training to offer an exercise class specifically designed for Parkinson’s patients. According to the program information, boxing can help Parkinson’s patients with symptoms. “More recent studies, most notably at Cleveland Clinic, focus on the concept of intense ‘forced’ exercise, and suggest that certain types of exercise are neuro-protective,” the Rock Steady Boxing site says, “which means that it is a type of exercise that may actually slow disease progression.”
